Marty was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, where he played hockey his entire
life. When he finished playing hockey, he became a dentist, and residency training initially
brought him from Michigan to Chicago. He is now the director of a dental residency program at
a large academic medical center in Chicago. In 2016, with his wife pregnant with their first
child, he was suddenly diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Marty was given a very
poor prognosis. In need of a life-saving blood stem cell transplant, finding a compatible donor
was a challenge. Fortunately for Marty and his family, three-and-a-half years of daily
chemotherapy allowed him to be cancer-free.
Marty didn't want another person to go through what he did so he created Windsor Tough to
raise awareness and grow the blood stem cell donor registry through sports and community
inspiration. By simply swabbing the inside of your cheek, a process that takes less than 20
seconds, an individual can be added to a worldwide registry and hopefully be matched up with
Someone who needs a life-saving blood stem cell transplant. Marty's life mission is
raising awareness and helping grow the worldwide registry in hopes that other patients
worldwide can find a compatible donor and receive a second chance at life following a
transplant.
